A diagnosis with cancer is a life-changing moment; it can be one of the most terrifying times in your life, throwing your entire future into jeopardy. To be told that your cancer is terminal, and that the best-case scenario would be a dangerous and painful course of chemotherapy just to keep you alive a little longer, must be even more frightening. But imagine if you dealt had with this news, and only just survived the course of chemotherapy, to discover that actually you didn’t have cancer at all.

Ann Milne was misdiagnosed with terminal liver cancer in 2008. Following the diagnosis she underwent a six-month course of aggressive chemotherapy, during which she was rushed to intensive care when her heart struggled to cope with the treatment. It was a year after this that it was finally discovered that she did not have, and had not had, cancer at all.

NHS Grampian agreed an out of court settlement of an undisclosed six figure sum so that the victim might have a chance to rebuild what was left of her life after the incident. She can no-longer walk unaided due to the muscle damage caused by the treatment, and she freely admits that the incident ruined her life and those of her family, who all thought she was going to die.

We are lucky that most of the time our medical professionals make the correct diagnosis and subsequently apply the correct treatment, but when this doesn’t happen, who can you turn to? The NHS has its own procedures for making a complaint about any part of the treatment you have received. Information should be provided at any healthcare establishment and you should make yourself familiar with this as soon as possible.
