A 70-year-old Yorkshire man died after two GPs failed to correctly assess his medical condition.

The man was in immense pain for a number of weeks and could not walk with the pain. Two GPs visited him at his home on consecutive days however he eventually passed away from a blood clot in his lung.

The case was investigated by the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO), finding that both of the doctors had been negligent. The report stated that the doctors had failed in their duty to appropriately assess the man and if necessary, investigate further and provide additional treatment.

The doctors have now learnt from their errors, the report states and have since taken action to ensure an incident of this nature never happens again. They also made clear that there was a strong possibility that even if the GPs hadn’t failed in their duties that the man would have died.

The doctors have issued an apology to the gentleman’s family and paid out £2,000 to them for their errors.

Fiona Tinsley, Solicitor in the Clinical Negligence Department at Clear Law, said: “This is a very sad case and now lessons have been learned from the GPs failure to diagnose and consequently treat the gentleman’s condition.

“It is hoped that any similar incidents will avoided by the local GPs as a result of this incident.”
