There has been a significant increase in the number of cosmetic surgery procedures taking place in the UK.

Figures released by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) show 50,122 cosmetic procedures were carried out in the UK in 2013; a 17% rise since 2012.

Liposuction saw the biggest increase in popularity with the number of procedures up by 41%. However, BAAPS confirmed they saw an increase “across the board.”

Breast augmentation was recorded as the most popular procedure for women whilst for men, nose jobs were the most popular choice.

Rajiv Grover, president of BAAPS, said these latest figures showed “the most impressive rise in demand for cosmetic surgery we have seen since the onset of the recession in 2008. “

However, with the number of people opting for cosmetic surgery only seeming to increase, it is vital that the industry is properly regulated. An independent review of the sector, carried out by NHS Medical Director Sir Bruce Keogh in April 2013, made several recommendations to sufficiently regulate
the industry and ensure the safety of those who opt for surgery.

By 2015, forecasters expect the industry to be worth £3.6 billion to the UK’s economy.
