Clear Law is backing calls from a group of MPs, who have called for cancer services to improve in England.

The report states that current services for cancer patients have “lost momentum” during the past two years and NHS services need to adapt to cope with the demand.

Whilst they are improving, cancer survival rates in the UK are still very poor compared with the rest of Europe, the Public Accounts Committee said, and the NHS is struggling to meet its waiting time targets with reduced resources.

NHS England said it is already working on a new five-year strategy.

The report was published after several cancer charities and specialists looked at the progress that had been made in improving cancer services and outcomes in England.

Margaret Hodge, chair of the committee, said: “With more than one in three people developing cancer in their lifetime, cancer touches the lives of all of us at some point, and the Department of Health spends over £6.7bn on cancer services a year.

“That is why it is so concerning that the Department of Health and NHS England have lost momentum in the drive to improve cancer services in the last two years.

“More and more people are getting cancer but the resources available to support improvement have gone down.”

The report found that although cancer services had improved progress had dipped recently.

Sarah Woolnough, Executive Director of Policy at Cancer Research UK, said: “It is depressing that too many patients are waiting longer than they should for their diagnosis and effective treatment.

“We hope the report will urgently catalyse NHS England, the Department of Health and others charged with providing cancer care to deliver the best for all patients, no matter their age, the cancer they suffer from or where they live.”

Fiona Hedges, Medical Negligence Solicitor at Clear Law, who has helped many victims of negligent cancer care, said: “We are right behind these calls to prioritise and improve care for cancer patients in England.

“All patients rightly expect to receive the best possible treatment should they be diagnosed with cancer but sadly many are currently not receiving it as waiting time targets are being missed and resources are tight.

“It is encouraging that services have improved but the focus really needs to be on progressing the level of care currently being offered to patients and improving cancer services and outcomes as a priority.”
