A medical centre in Barnsley is potentially facing hundreds of legal claims after vaccines were found to have been stored in in a faulty fridge for five years, compromising their effectiveness for patients.

Over 500 children now face having to be reinoculated because of the way that the vaccines were being stored at Brierley Medical Centre. Those vaccinated against diseases and infections such as meningitis, measles, mumps and rubella between the beginning of 2009 and June 2014 have now been contacted by the centre and offered new vaccinations. 99 of the children have received these so far.

Although there have been assurances from authorities that the children haven’t been harmed by the vaccines there are still concerns that they could be repercussions for this medical negligence.

Fiona Jorden, Consultant in Public Health for NHS England in Yorkshire and the Humber, said: “NHS England is committed to commissioning high-quality primary care services for patients and our priority remains to ensure that all patients affected by the recall have the opportunity to receive fresh vaccinations.”
